Commercial vs Personal Auto Insurance

Why pet transporters need commercial auto insurance and what it covers

Why Pet Transporters Need Commercial Auto Insurance

If you're transporting pets professionally for compensation, your personal auto insurance policy will not cover you. Personal auto insurance policies explicitly exclude coverage for business use, including transporting animals for hire.

Commercial auto insurance is designed specifically for vehicles used in business operations. When you accept payment to transport someone's pet, you're engaged in a commercial activity that requires appropriate business coverage.

Personal vs Commercial: Key Differences

Personal Auto Insurance

  • Covers personal driving only
  • Excludes business activities
  • Will not cover accidents while transporting pets for pay
  • May cancel your policy if they discover commercial use

Commercial Auto Insurance

  • Covers business use of vehicle
  • Protects you during pet transportation activities
  • Includes hired and non-owned auto coverage
  • Provides liability protection for business operations

What Commercial Auto Insurance Covers

Liability Coverage

Covers bodily injury and property damage to others if you're at fault in an accident while conducting business. This includes accidents that occur while transporting pets.

Hired and Non-Owned Auto Coverage

Protects you if you rent a vehicle for business use or if an employee uses their personal vehicle for your business. Essential for pet transport businesses with multiple drivers.

Physical Damage Coverage

Covers damage to your own vehicle from collisions, theft, vandalism, or natural disasters. Includes both comprehensive and collision coverage options.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Protects you if you're in an accident with a driver who has no insurance or insufficient coverage. Critical protection for professional drivers on the road frequently.

Required Coverage Limits for Professional Pet Transport

While minimum requirements vary by state, professional pet transporters should carry higher liability limits than standard minimums to adequately protect their business:

Recommended Minimum Coverage

  • Liability: $1,000,000 per occurrence (combined single limit)
  • Physical Damage: Actual cash value or replacement cost of vehicle
  • Uninsured Motorist: $1,000,000 per occurrence

Note: Some platforms and clients may require higher limits. Always check specific requirements before accepting transport contracts.

Important: Commercial Insurance is Separate from Animal Coverage

Commercial auto insurance covers vehicle accidents and liability. It does NOT cover injury, illness, or loss of the animals you're transporting. For that, you needAnimal Bailee Insurance, which is a separate policy.

Getting Commercial Auto Insurance

  • Vehicle information (make, model, year, VIN)
  • Driving record and license information
